Community Consultation

The proper and constructive involvement of local communities in significant development proposals is nowadays not only a corporate responsibility but also a statutory requirement.

Iain Vellacott and Althea Taylor-Salmon have over 40 years’ combined experience of handling all aspects of community, political and media relations in support of medium- and large-scale housing development proposals and other schemes.

There are four distinct stages to our work:

1 Research and Strategy Development

– Stakeholder and project research

– Strategy development

2 Implementation

– Promotion and dissemination of information

– Community consultation website

– Direct communications, including publications, exhibitions, and social media

– Consultation and engagement

– Media relations

– Lobbying and community liaison

3 Reporting

– Writing the Statement of Community Engagement

4 Monitoring

– Monitoring and advice on emerging issues

An example of a recent project that we handled encompassing many of these activities is the 2,600-home mixed-use development to the north of Bishop’s Stortford that received planning consent in 2014.

Community Engagement on Development Proposals – Bishop's Stortford North

Iain is undoubtedly one of the best in the business. His extensive experience coupled with his understanding of the planning system make him a key member of a project team. His initial research and ongoing monitoring are always extremely useful in identifying potential issues and opportunities and his communications abilities are excellent -whether it be writing press releases or exhibition boards or just having a quiet cup of tea with a concerned local resident. I would have no hesitation in recommending Iain – he is a pleasure to work with, an excellent ambassador and he always gives 100% commitment to a project.
